Heritage Mazda

New for 2016

Now two years into its current generation, the 2016 Mazda6 gets a number of important enhancements. For starters, the Grand Touring trim now sports revised front and rear styling along with new LED headlights. Additionally, all models with the exception of the base Sport with manual transmission get a larger seven-inch touchscreen. Rounding out the list of new features is a new electronic parking brake and upgraded trim on the dash, center console, and armrest--all of which are now standard across the board.

It Just Keeps Getting Better

The midsize sedan is the archetypal American car, but archetypal often means boring. In a segment where practical concerns like space and fuel economy often trump style and performance, the 2016 Mazda6 proves that you really can have it all.

Not only does this four-door sedan offer plenty of practicality, safety, and value, it also sports handsome styling and an enthusiastic driving experience one would expect from a more overtly sporty car. This is a midsize sedan done right. This is the 2016 Mazda6.

Powertrain and Performance

Under the curvaceous hood is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. While it’s the only engine offered right now, this four-banger boasts Mazda’s SKYACTIV® technology, which helps get the most out of its relatively small size both in terms of fuel efficiency and power.

This high-tech engine can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. There’s also an optional i-ELOOP regenerative braking system that takes some of the load off the engine by using braking energy to power electrical accessories.

The whole powertrain speaks of an emphasis on mpg, and the numbers don’t disappoint. The EPA rates the 2016 Mazda6 at 29 mpg combined (25 mpg city, 37 mpg highway) with the manual transmission, and 31 mpg combined (26 mpg city, 38 mpg highway) with the automatic.*

With the automatic and i-ELOOP, though, the ratings reach an impressive 32 mpg combined (28 mpg city, 40 mpg highway).*

Features and Trims

The 2016 Mazda6 is available only as a four-door sedan, and there are three trim levels that cover all of the bases.

The base Sport model is well equipped and starts at $21,495** with a manual transmission. Standard equipment includes push-button start, steering wheel mount cruise and audio controls, auxiliary/USB input, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The automatic-equipped Sport adds more features, including: Bluetooth® connectivity, Pandora and HD Radio capability, audio voice controls, a seven-inch touchscreen, and rearview camera.

Moving up to the midlevel Touring trim level adds convenience features such as a six-way power driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, and leatherette upholstery.

In addition, Touring buyers can specify the Bose®/Moonroof/Satellite package, which includes 11-speaker Bose® audio, power moonroof, and SiriusXM® with a free four-month subscription. There’s also a Touring Technology package that adds TomTom-based navigation, auto on/off headlights, and rain-sensing wipers, among other features.

The top 2016 Mazda6 trim level is the Grand Touring, which includes all of the applicable features available with the lesser models and trim packages.

On top of that, the Grand Touring sports LED daytime running lights, leather seats with front heating, and adaptive front lighting. A Grand Touring Technology package adds radar cruise control, i-ELOOP, active grille shutters, and other features.

Design

The 2016 Mazda6’s exterior is a perfect match for its sporty character. From its prominent shield-shape grille to the character lines that flow aft from the front fenders, this one’s a looker. The overall shape is complimented by details like dual exhaust tips and delicately-shaped headlights.

The interior isn’t as flamboyant as the exterior, but it’s elegant and ergonomic nonetheless. The seats are comfortable and supportive, and all of the controls and displays are easy to use and read. On models so equipped, the console-mounted infotainment controller is one of the most intuitive available on any car.

Safety

Standard safety equipment for the 2016 Mazda6 includes: six airbags, antilock brakes, stability and traction controls, and a hill-start assist for manual-transmission models.

On top of that, Mazda offers its i-ACTIVESENSE suite of features as options.  This encompasses active safety features like lane departure warning, forward obstruction warming, and Smart City Brake Support, which can stop the car automatically in certain situations.

Bottom Line

The 2016 Mazda6 is one of the most appealing all-around cars available. It’s practical, fuel efficient, and features a formidable array of safety tech, yet it’s also stylish, fun to drive, and equipped with plenty of tech toys. Practicality and fun are too often separated, but the Mazda6 proves that both values can coexist.
