2017 Mazda6
Are you ready to move on from the humdrum Hondas and tepid Toyotas that occupy the midsize sedan segment? We don’t blame you. If you’d like to transform your commute into something you actually look forward to, the Mazda6 can help make it happen.
The 2017 Mazda6 rolls into the new model year with an impressive number of improvements that make it even more compelling. All 2017 Mazda6 models get G-Vectoring Control, which uses nearly imperceptible engine modulations to ease your own nearly imperceptible steering adjustments, resulting in improved handling and performance. Base Mazda6 models receive a 7-inch infotainment screen as standard, while Touring and Grand Touring models receive active safety and driving aids like automatic emergency braking lane-keeping assist as standard.
Performance
Under the curvaceous hood is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. While it’s the only engine offered right now, this four-banger boasts Mazda’s SKYACTIV® technology, which helps get the most out of its relatively small size, both in terms of fuel efficiency and power.
This high-tech engine can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. There’s also an optional i-ELOOP regenerative braking system that takes some of the load off the engine by using braking energy to power electrical accessories.
The whole powertrain speaks of an emphasis on mpg, and the numbers don’t disappoint. The EPA rates the 2017 Mazda6 at 28 mpg combined (24 mpg city, 34 mpg highway) with the manual transmission, and 29 mpg combined (26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway) with the automatic transmission and GT Premium package.*
As previously mentioned, the new G-Vectoring Control system promises even greater agility.
Features
The 2017 Mazda6 is available only as a four-door sedan, and there are three trim levels that cover all of the bases.
The base Sport model is well equipped and starts at $21,945** with a manual transmission. Standard equipment includes push-button start, steering-wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, auxiliary/USB input, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Remote keyless entry/ignition, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and Bluetooth® audio streaming are also standard, as are a rearview camera and the Mazda Connect infotainment system—complete with voice control, text messaging capabilities, a 7-inch touchscreen, and a six-speaker CD player.
Moving up to the midlevel Touring trim adds 19-inch wheels and convenience features such as automatic headlights, automatic wipers, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and forward collision mitigation, to name a few.
In addition, Touring buyers can specify the Bose®/Moonroof/Satellite package, which includes 11-speaker Bose® audio, power moonroof, and SiriusXM® with a free four-month subscription. There's also a new Premium package that adds adaptive auto-leveling LED headlights, LED running lights, heated mirrors, and heated front seats.
The top 2017 Mazda6 trim level is the Grand Touring, which includes all of the applicable features available with the lesser models and trim packages.
The Grand Touring is also eligible for the GT Premium package that adds Mazda's i-ELOOP brake regeneration system to increase fuel efficiency. Also included are active grille shutters, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, premium leather front sport seats, interior ambient lighting, a black headliner, and unique interior trim elements.
Design
The 2017 Mazda6’s exterior is a perfect match for its sporty character. From its prominent shield-shaped grille to the character lines that flow aft from the front fenders, this one’s a looker. The overall shape is complemented by details like dual exhaust tips and delicately shaped headlights.
The interior isn’t as flamboyant as the exterior, but it’s elegant and ergonomic nonetheless. The seats are comfortable and supportive, and all of the controls and displays are easy to use and read. On models so equipped, the console-mounted infotainment controller is one of the most intuitive available on any car.
Safety
Standard safety equipment for the 2017 Mazda6 includes six airbags, antilock brakes, stability and traction controls, and a hill-start assist for manual-transmission models.
On top of that, Mazda offers its i-ACTIVSENSE suite of features as options. This encompasses active safety features like lane departure warning, forward obstruction warning, and Smart City Brake Support, which can stop the car automatically in certain situations.
Verdict
The 2017 Mazda6 is one of the most appealing all-around cars available. It’s practical, fuel-efficient, and features a formidable array of safety tech, yet it’s also stylish, fun to drive, and equipped with plenty of tech toys. Practicality and fun are too often separated, but the Mazda6 proves that both values can coexist.
