Heritage Mazda

Overview

The Mazda Mazda6 has been punching above its weight for a few years now. Where the mid-size Mazda sedan used to be an economical option with a hint of sportiness, it’s now blossomed into an opulent luxury sport sedan. The biggest development of the 2019 Mazda6, aside from the fact that 2019 is a new generation, is the first time we’ve seen a turbocharged engine under the hood of a Mazda sporting the number “6”. The 2019 Mazda6 begins at $23,800 for the entry “Sport” trim, but to get the full experience you can opt for the range-topping “Signature” trim for a cool $35,100.*

Design

Mazda really turned the tables on the industry with the introduction of its Koto design language. It is comprised of elegant swopping lines transcendent of anything else in its class. Mazda’s signature is also quickly becoming its large mesh grille creating an impressive and imposing front-fascia. The silhouette is very similar to the previous generation and maintains a classic sedan shape maximizing headroom in the rear with a traditional roofline. The rear is, again, very similar to the previous generation inclusive of Mazda’s classic dual exhaust which always sounds quite good from its 2.5-liter engine and now with the addition of a turbo, it sounds even better.

Cabin

The interior is the biggest draw to the Mazda6 versus the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. It sports an incredibly luxurious and beautifully designed interior. Mazda provides some of the most supple Nappa leather interiors in its class and it also offers a Parchment leather, unlike any other competitors. Signature trims will also get Microsuede lining and Japanese Sen wood around the interior, in addition to the Nappa leather. One of the things Mazda has focused on with this 2019 Mazda6 is driver comfort. Entire teams of engineers have spent countless hours designing the seats, which perfectly contour to your body. On top of comfort and design, the cockpit is meticulously and minimally designed to convey a simple elegance. The dash is donned with a new touchscreen infotainment display and below some microsuede and Japanese Sen wood you’ll find some high-end brushed aluminum climate control switches.

Features

For 2019 Mazda has equipped the Mazda6 with all the modern technology and safety equipment you would need. Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ make an appearance as standard equipment if you don’t want to use the new Mazda branded infotainment system. A 360-degree camera makes maneuvering your sporty Mazda6 incredibly easy and safe. Speaking of safety, i-Activesense is Mazda’s comprehensive safety suite including features such as active high-beam headlights, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Mazda Radar Cruise with Stop & Go, and Traffic Sign Recognition. This 2019 Mazda6 comes incredibly well-equipped.

Dynamics

In a world of appliances, Mazda has always been seen as the enthusiasts choice for a practical sedan. The steering is precise and has a good feel to it that’s engaging, but not exhausting. The body is well-composed when cornering even at higher speeds and the refinement of the cabin allows you to focus on driving rather than road noise. Sport and Touring trims will get the same naturally aspirated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that we’re used to seeing, while the Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature trims come equipped with the company’s new 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. On regular unleaded fuel, the turbocharged engine will make 227 horsepower, but if you give it the good stuff the engine will produce 250 horsepower on 93 octane premium fuel. Torque is rated at 310 pound-feet which is what makes the car feel so energetic and peppy and allows it to offer such a lively personality. The Mazda6 is undoubtedly the driver’s choice in the segment.

Verdict

The 2019 Mazda6 takes everything we’ve come to love and dialed it up to 11. A more beautiful, luxurious, nor comfortable interior exists in the segment while sport-derived dynamics make the car just as fun to drive as it is to look at. Ultimately, the 2019 Mazda6 ticks all the boxes you could possibly fathom and starting at $23,800 it’s easy to see that Mazda has a real winner here.
