Heritage Mazda

Overview

It’s not often that one sees cars, let alone SUVs, that stir the soul. However, Mazda does just that with the 2023 CX-5. The compact SUV not only delivers with soulful styling, but it also exudes a luxurious look and feel that makes it feel worth more than its relatively affordable asking price. For 2023, the CX-5 sits alongside the very similar CX-50, with the latter representing a more rugged approach to the compact crossover. In the meantime, the only change for 2023 is the addition of Rhodium White to the CX-5’s impressive exterior color roster.

The Perfect Ride For…

The small SUV shopper in search of an upscale experience. The 2023 Mazda CX-5 definitely delivers on that front with a broad array of high-end touches. The classy exterior benefits from Mazda’s “Kodo” design philosophy, resulting in a sleek, flowing design that exudes a sense of speed even when standing still. Select models feature blacked-out exterior trim touches along with 19-inch alloy wheels finished in gloss black. Inside, the CX-5 features a surprisingly sporty cabin that’s oriented towards the driver. Choosing the Signature trim adds Caturra Brown Nappa leather-trimmed seats and genuine wood trim to the long list of available interior features.

Drive and Handling

In a land of SUVs that come standard with front-wheel drive, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 marches to a different tune with standard all-wheel drive. The i-ACTIV all-wheel drive system works wonders to keep the CX-5 poised on pavement while giving it plenty of capability on dirt, snow and other soft surfaces. Depending on which trim you choose, you’ll have your pick between the standard 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine and a turbocharged version of the same engine. The naturally-aspirated version delivers an ample 187 horsepower with 186 pound-feet of torque, all while earning an EPA-estimated 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

Those looking for a snappier driving experience should look no further than the turbocharged 2.5-liter mill. With an impressive 256 horsepower and an outstanding 320 pound-feet of torque available as low as 2,500 RPM, the turbo motor definitely lives up to Mazda’s “zoom-zoom” mantra. Regardless of which engine you choose, power flows through a 6-speed automatic transmission complete with Sport and manual shift modes. With the Mazda Intelligent Drive Select or “Mi-Drive” system, drivers can toggle among three pre-set drive modes for enhanced performance, depending on their driving needs.

Key Features

Safety

In keeping with other compact crossovers, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 also features an assortment of must-have safety and driver-assistance features as part of the i-Activsense Safety Technology suite. These features include Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Day and Night-time Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. You’ll also find Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go, along with Driver Attention Alert and the Smart Braking System.

Infotainment

Unlike many other compact crossovers, the 2023 Mazda CX-5’s 10.25-inch center display isn’t touch-capable. Instead, this system uses a control knob to scroll through the system’s numerous options.
