Go Behind the Scenes With Mazda

At Heritage Mazda Bel Air, Catonsville & Towson, we love putting people behind the wheel of new Mazda models every day, but for some diehard fans, simply owning one isn’t enough. What do you do if your Mazda is more than just a mode of transportation? What can you do if it’s a passion? For these special few, Mazda offers an in-depth experience that includes one-of-a-kind hands-on experiences and thrilling track time.

Spec Miata Racing

Hands down one of the most iconic amateur racing cars ever is the Mazda MX-5 Miata. In production since 1989, more than a million of these diminutive sports cars have been built and sold around the world, making them an inexpensive and plentiful option for those looking to get into racing. And boy, is there a lot of racing done by Miatas.

One of the predominant forms of competition that revolves specifically around the Miata is Spec Miata Racing. As part of the National Auto Sport Association (or NASA), Spec Miata is a recognized class of racing that pits 1600cc Miatas built between 1990 and 1993, and 1800cc cars built between 1994 and 2005. While the Miata has never been the most powerful car on the road, its lightweight, incredible driving dynamics, and the ease with which it can be turned into a Spec Miata race car makes the Mazda Miata the ideal platform.

Another attractive feature of the Miata when it comes to racing is its availability and the relatively low cost of purchasing a pre-race prepped car or creating one yourself. A few thousand dollars can get you the keys to a solid example of an early Miata, and because a Spec Miata keeps the vast majority of the car stock, it’s not a whole lot more to get it ready to race. It’s time to go racing!
